HiExpat: The number one Andean city destination for North American expats looking to retire or invest in Ecuador is Cuenca. A place that is home to great cultural diversity and rich architectural history. Al Cubo Arquitectura has brought a new concept of sustainable and contemporary architecture with a mixture of ancient techniques to the city. Could you tell us a little more about this new concept of architecture?
Al Cubo: Through our work in the Historic Center of Cuenca, we were able to identify the traditional techniques with which these buildings of great architectural value, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were built. This architecture and these buildings were almost entirely lost as both citizens and construction workers made the switch from traditional techniques to the use of reinforced concrete, metal, or a combination of both for all types of buildings. Many viewed traditional techniques as expired and as a symbol of poverty or poor living conditions.
However, in our architecture studio we were able to identify that traditional techniques are much more sustainable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly. Additionally, they are more comfortable and safe for those who inhabit them since they have better insulation, regulate the humidity of the environment, and on top of it all, they confer great expressiveness to an architectural work while giving it an identity. For all these reasons we decided, after some experimentation, that we could update these traditional techniques and merge them with today's architecture. By doing this we take advantage of the benefits from both styles and that is how our "Fusion Architecture" was born, mixing the best of both past and present architecture.
HiExpat: Based on these new techniques, what are the challenges you have faced as a company when incorporating this new type of architecture?
Al Cubo:
Reviving traditional techniques and understanding how to use them was our first challenge. Applying the techniques to our current designs was the second challenge. First we had to use virtual models to check the feasibility of the techniques and evaluate its aesthetic value. Then, through experimentation, we were able to test the resistance, durability, and evaluate the appearance in terms of contemporary architecture.
Finally, we thought that putting this new proposal on the market and collecting success stories from families would be our biggest challenge. Luckily, we were overwhelmed with satisfied customers whose homes had exceeded their expectations. The publicity at the local and national level allowed us to see that there is an audience that yearned for this new concept in architecture.
HiExpat: Every day we witness technological advances worldwide, what technological components do you use in fusion architecture? What led Al Cubo to using this technique?
Al Cubo: Fusion Architecture uses various technological components ranging from home automation, energy efficiency systems, solar and photovoltaic panels, rainwater collection and treatment systems, biofilters, biodigesters, dry toilets, eco-materials, recycling, sustainable landscaping, and permaculture.
Al Cubo was created as a way to develop architecture that is respectful to the environment, more humane, and focuses on the well-being of the people who live in the buildings we make. It is our goal to make daily activities easier, comfortable, healthy, and individualized for each person and families needs.
We are ecologically aware. The architecture field has been working to have an almost zero carbon footprint for the past 15 years, which is why it is so important to us to use eco-friendly techniques and materials. By implementing one by one construction systems and using technological advancements, we are able to make more ecologically beneficial decisions.
Precisely this desire to make a change by building and creating architecture led us to create this fusion architecture and implement it. It has been difficult but very gratifying to spread this new concept of architecture and achieve such success in the past few years through emblematic works that have been awarded national and international recognition.
HiExpat: Today environmental conservation issues are paramount in all fields of development. Al Cubo Arquitectura has received several international awards, among which the Quality Through Sustainability Award of the WQC Paris 2021, is one of them. Please tell our readers a little more about this and the work you have done to achieve such recognition.
Al Cubo: WQC Paris 2021 is an award for quality, excellence, and innovation that Bid Group awards around the world, which recognizes companies that have been making progress in their field through innovation and efficiency. In the field of construction and architecture, they looked for companies that, being already recognized in their own countries, have, in addition to innovation and efficiency, a true commitment to sustainability and care for the environment. It is through these selection processes that they found our company and decided to recognize the work that we have been doing for approximately the past 18 years. Additionally, today more than ever, our work is relevant given the seriousness of the pollution situation on our planet and the large number of CO2 emissions which generate great concern at a global level. Initiatives such as the 2030 Agenda seek commitments not only from governments but also from companies and citizens in search of sustainable development and environmental protection.
HiExpat: Finally, what recommendations would you give to the foreign community that wants to invest in housing in our country, from an ecological and sustainability point of view?
Al Cubo: In Ecuador we have three regions which are the Sierra, Costa, and Oriente. As unique and beautiful as each one is, this phenomena is unique and allows one to enjoy a change of climate and natural environment at any time with just a few hours of travel.
Each of these regions has great potential for contemporary ecological architecture. For example, in the mountains we use clay such as adobe, super adobe, bahareque or tapial, on the coast bamboo, cane, muyuyo, wood and stones native to the area, and in the Amazon there is also guadúa cane, chonta, pambil, and other sustainable local materials. When incorporated into all types of buildings through fusion architecture, these materials allow inhabitants to live in a unique environment that combines current materials and technologies with eco-materials and ancestral techniques that provide great contrast, strength, and identity to each home and thus allows us to live in harmony with nature. Investing in Ecuador is investing in quality of life, in quality spaces, and at the same time contributing to the sustainable development of the country.

HiExpat: Cuenca, la ciudad andina número uno como destino para expats norteamericanos que buscan retirarse o invertir en Ecuador, alberga una gran diversidad cultural y mucha historia arquitectónica. De esta manera, Al Cubo Arquitectura trae un nuevo concepto de arquitectura sostenible y contemporánea con una mezcla de técnicas ancestrales que seguro cautivan a más de uno. ¿Podría contarnos un poco más de este nuevo concepto de arquitectura?
Al Cubo: Pudimos identificar por nuestro trabajo en el Centro Histórico de Cuenca que las técnicas tradicionales con las que se construyeron estas edificaciones de gran valor arquitectónico hoy Patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco; se habían perdido casi en su totalidad, tanto la ciudadanía como quienes trabajan en construcción habían dejado de lado el uso de las mismas y se cambió por el uso del hormigón armado, metal o mixto para todo tipo de edificaciones, calificando todas estas técnicas tradicionales como caducas y cómo un símbolo de pobreza o malas condiciones de habitabilidad. Sin embargo en nuestro estudio de arquitectura pudimos identificar que las técnicas tradicionales en primer lugar son mucho más sostenibles, biodegradables y se usan muchos eco materiales; adicionalmente son más confortables y saludables para quienes las habitan ya que poseen mejores condiciones de confort térmico, acústico, regula la humedad del ambiente y por último confieren gran expresividad a una obra arquitectónica a la vez que le dan identidad; por todo ello decidimos que en base a la experimentación podríamos actualizar estas técnicas tradicionales y fusionarlas con la arquitectura de hoy con sus ventajas y bondades tanto en formas como espacios, así fue cómo nació nuestra “Arquitectura Fusión” que mezcla lo mejor de la arquitectura del pasado con la arquitectura del presente.
HiExpat: En base a estas nuevas técnicas ¿cuáles son los desafíos que como empresa han enfrentado al incorporar un concepto nuevo de arquitectura?
Al Cubo:
Rescatar las técnicas tradicionales y su correcta aplicación en la actualidad fue el primer reto,
Resolver su aplicación en diseños actuales fue el segundo reto, primero en modelos virtuales que demuestren la factibilidad de la aplicación y su valor estético, luego la experimentación para comprobar su resistencia, durabilidad y expresividad en obras de arquitectura contemporánea.
Por último poner en el mercado esta nueva propuesta y obtener casos de éxito de familias satisfechas con sus viviendas fue un reto que superó las expectativas y su difusión a nivel local y nacional nos permitió ver que existe un público que anhelaba este nuevo concepto en arquitectura.
HiExpat: Día a día somos testigos de los avances tecnológicos a nivel mundial, ¿qué componentes encontramos en la arquitectura fusión? ¿Qué llevó a Al Cubo a introducirse en esta técnica?
Al Cubo: La Arquitectura Fusión incluye varios avances tecnológicos que van desde la domótica hasta sistemas de eficiencia energética, paneles solares y fotovoltaicos, sistemas de recolección y tratamiento de aguas lluvias, biofiltros, biodigestores, baños secos, eco materiales, reciclaje, paisajismo sostenible, permacultura, etc.
El deseo de crear una arquitectura respetuosa con el medio ambiente y más humana que desde el diseño se centra en el bienestar de las personas que habitan las edificaciones que realizamos ayudando a que sus actividades diarias en el hogar se desarrollen en un entorno confortable, saludable, interesante, dinámico y diferente, tal como lo es cada persona y familia. Tiene conciencia ecológica, ya que al cubo arquitectura desde hace aproximadamente 15 años se encuentra en una constante búsqueda para que los sectores de la arquitectura y construcción lleguen a tener una huella de carbono casi nula, por eso venimos trabajando con conciencia ecológica implementando uno a uno los sistemas de construcción y avances tecnológicos más respetuosos con el medio ambiente.
Justamente este deseo de realizar un cambio en la manera de construir y concebir la arquitectura nos llevó a crear esta arquitectura fusión e implementarla y no menos difícil pero muy gratificante ha sido difundir este nuevo concepto de arquitectura y en pocos años haber logrado muchos casos de éxito con obras emblemáticas que han sido premiadas con reconocimientos nacionales e internacionales.
HiExpat: En la actualidad, los temas de conservación ambiental son primordiales en todos los campos de desarrollo. Al Cubo Arquitectura cuenta con varios premios internacionales, entre los cuales destaca el premio Quality through Sustainability del WQC Paris 2021. Nos gustaría que nuestros lectores conocieran un poco más acerca de esta experiencia y del trabajo que realizaron para alcanzar tal reconocimiento.
Al Cubo: WQC Paris 2021 es un premio a la calidad, excelencia e innovación que otorga Bid Group alrededor del mundo reconociendo a empresas que vienen realizando avances en su rama a través de la innovación y eficiencia; en el campo de la construcción y la arquitectura buscaron empresas que siendo ya reconocidas en sus propios países tengan a más de la innovación y eficiencia un verdadero compromiso con la Sostenibilidad y cuidado del medio ambiente; es allí cuando en sus procesos de selección encontraron a nuestra empresa y quisieron reconocer todo nuestro trabajo que lo venimos realizando hace aproximadamente 18 años y que hoy más que nunca tiene relevancia dada la gravedad de la situación de contaminación de nuestro planeta y la gran cantidad de emisiones de CO2 que genera gran preocupación a nivel global, por lo que iniciativas como la agenda 2030 buscan compromisos no solo de gobiernos sino de empresas y de los ciudadanos en general en busca del desarrollo sostenible y protección del medio ambiente.
HiExpat: Finalmente, qué recomendaciones le darían a la comunidad extranjera que quiere invertir en viviendas en nuestro país, desde el punto de vista ecológico y de sustentabilidad.
Al Cubo: En Ecuador contamos con tres regiones Sierra Costa y Oriente tan singulares como hermosas cada una y a pocas horas de distancia, esta condición única es fascinante al momento de vivir en el país ya que se podrá disfrutar de cambiar de clima, entorno natural en cualquier momento con tan solo recorrer unas horas de viaje.
Cada una de estas regiones cuenta con un gran potencial para realizar arquitectura ecológica contemporánea, por ejemplo en la sierra rescatamos el uso del barro ya sea como adobe, super adobe, bahareque o tapial, en la costa la caña guadúa, muyuyo, madera y piedras del sector, en el oriente se cuenta también con caña guadúa, chonta, pambil y otros materiales locales que al ser incorporados en todo tipo de edificaciones por medio de arquitectura fusión les permitirán vivir en un ambiente único que combina materiales y tecnologías actuales con eco materiales y técnicas ancestrales y que proporcionan gran contraste fuerza e identidad a cada vivienda y así vivir en armonía con la naturaleza. Invertir en Ecuador es invertir en calidad de vida, en espacios de calidad y a la vez aportar al desarrollo sostenible del país.
